Healthy When Older

There’s no doubt that as we age, our bodies change. Getting older may mean experiencing more aches and pains. Our joints may not have as much range of motion as they used to. Too many people adapt to a lifestyle that doesn’t include exercise. However, we can prevent many of the potential medical conditions and illnesses that are often associated with getting older. With just a little bit of attention to our diets and some regular exercise, we can retain higher energy levels decrease our aches and pains. Being healthy over fifty is definitely possible.

One important way to maintain or improve your health is to go to the doctor for regular screenings. Your doctor will most likely order blood work and other tests to get a good glimpse as to what’s going on inside your body, including your hormone levels. Our hormones play a direct role in maintaining health. Your doctor will also measure your weight and blood pressure to make sure your current range is where it’s supposed to be. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you should ask questions about how to manage those conditions. You may be prescribed medications or put on a special diet.

Being healthy over fifty is more than just about maintaining the “right” weight. It’s also about maintaining muscle tone and strong joints. Your muscles need regular exercise and the right fuel to support your lifestyle. That’s why eating foods with plenty of protein is a good idea. And don’t forget about your fruits and vegetables – they provide plenty of nutrients that your body needs. Take care of yourself by paying attention to the foods that you eat.

Your brain also needs to stay in the game. Staying active and healthy also pertains to your mental health. This is the perfect time of life to try things that you haven’t before – such as joining clubs you may not have had time for when you were younger. Many libraries have book clubs. Maybe now is the time to learn a new skill by signing up for a class at the local community center. Those are great ways to stimulate your brain and meet new people. And you never know where those new connections and experiences can take you. They can certainly enhance your life and your overall health in ways that will often be a pleasant surprise!
