Ice cream is loved by people of all ages, from children to senior citizens, but over the last few decades, frozen yogurt has become a very popular alternative. Many people see frozen yogurt as healthy alternative to regular ice cream. In fact, according to a survey, 95% of Americans think it’s healthier. But is it really?
Frozen Yogurt vs. Ice Cream
Frozen yogurt and ice cream do have their similarities. They are both made using dairy products. But, they also have their differences. Ice cream must contain at least 10 percent milkfat, so cream is added. On the other hand, frozen yogurt is made with yogurt, and it does not contain cream. This means that their nutritional values vary, so which one is better?
– Frozen Yogurt Contains more Sugar
Frozen yogurt usually contains more sugar than regular ice cream does. As it tends to have a tangier, sourer taste, manufacturers often add sugar to frozen ice yogurt to get rid of this tart taste. On average, a half cup serving of regular ice cream contains 14 grams of sugar, whereas the same serving of frozen yogurt contains 17 grams of sugar.
– Ice Cream Contains more Fat
While frozen yogurt might contain more sugar, traditional ice cream contains much more fat. One cup of ice cream contains around 9 grams of saturated fat, whereas the same amount of frozen yogurt only contains 4 grams of saturated fat. A high intake of saturated fat is associated with a number of health issues, like increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
– Frozen Yogurt Alone is not as Satisfying
As frozen yogurt contains less fat than regular ice cream, it’s unlikely to satiate your appetite in the way that regular ice cream would. After you eat regular ice cream, you’ll be kept fuller for longer, so it’s likely that you won’t feel the need to eat more.
Overall, if you want to lose weight, then frozen yogurt is the best option, because it’s lower in calories and it contains less fat. However, regular ice cream contains less sugar, and is more satisfying overall.
