This is one of the best ways to get cold without feeling cold. Swimming pools are typically lower than body temperature. A long workout in an 80-degreee pool, if it takes long enough, can add those extra calories if you are in the pool long enough to shiver. The intensity of the workout doesn’t matter. Do what is appropriate for your level of fitness. When you’re done, stay in the pool, hang on the edge, and gently kick until you are cold.
Snow or No?
Snow is an excellent way to get a cold weather workout. While skiing and snowboarding get a lot of attention, there is a great workout to be had in ice skating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing as well. While these are excellent workouts, it can be equally rewarding to work out in the outdoors when the weather is cold but there is no snow.
If you are going on a shorter run or walk, consider wearing one layer less than you typically do. This won’t be enough to make you hypothermic, but it might be enough to make you shiver. As a bonus, you can use this as an incentive to work a little more intensely to work up a sweat.
Remember to Wick
Cotton is one of the worst materials for keeping you warm because it holds on to moisture. While this can give you an extra layer of warmth while you are hot and sweaty, that water will get very cold and cling to your body after you cool down. Polypropylene, wool, fleece, and other wicking materials are better choices for workout gear.
